Study exposes issues with breastfeeding discrimination

On Behalf of | Apr 12, 2019 | Discrimination |

For many mothers, breastfeeding is the only way they want to feed their children. Unfortunately, reports have found that they face a lot of discrimination over this decision.

The study was carried out at the University of California’s Hastings College of Law and then published through the Center for WorkLife Law. It claims that workplace breastfeeding discrimination has:

  • Impacted the earning ability of thousands of women
  • Affected their employment status
  • Adversely impacted their personal health
  • Negatively affected the health of their newborn babies

While the health benefits to the child are well-known, people often overlook the health benefits that women see when they have a chance to breastfeed their children. These can include:

  • Lowering the risk of breast and ovarian cancers
  • Increasing their metabolic rate
  • Lowering risk of Type-2 diabetes
  • Promoting a better blood pressure numbers
  • Helping with faster postpartum healing

Of course, there is also the mental and emotional impact of not being allowed to breastfeed due to discrimination. It can be daunting for women who feel like they’re not given the same chances as their male peers. It can take away from their time to bond with their babies. With the increased role that women have now in the workplace over the last few generations, this is something that employers cannot ignore.

Have you been discriminated against for breastfeeding or has your employer refused to make proper concessions to allow you to feed your child as you wish? If so, it is very important to know all of the legal options you have and how you can fight for your rights.
