Dealing with religious discrimination at work

On Behalf of | Apr 5, 2018 | Discrimination |

Whether it is because of your gender, disability or because of your religion, it is never acceptable to be discriminated against at work. Therefore, if you do experience behavior such as this, it is important to know your rights, and what you can do about the situation.

The law in all states prohibits discriminatory behavior. This means a wide range of things for employees. It means that you, as an employee, do not need to tolerate any type of differential treatment that is based on your religion, or your lack of religion.

What are my protections from religious discrimination in the workplace?

The legal protections in place mean that you cannot be refused a job, fired or demoted because of the religion that you practice. In addition, it also means that your employer and your coworkers cannot make working life difficult or uncomfortable for you based upon the religion that you practice. For example, if your employer knows that you attend prayer at a certain time of the day, it would be wrongful of him or her to decide to arrange the most important meetings at that time of day, when they could easily be rearranged.

In addition, your employer has the responsibility to make reasonable accommodations in regard to your religious requirements. Certain dress codes should be allowed if there is not a good reason.

If you practice a certain religion and you believe that you are being treated unfairly in the workplace because of this, it is important that you take action in order to stand up for your rights and your future career.
