Startling facts about discrimination in the workplace

On Behalf of | Dec 23, 2016 | Discrimination |

Workplace discrimination gets more attention now than it has in the past, but it’s still absolutely an issue. Below are a few facts about potential discrimination that can be very eye-opening.

1. Women earn less than men. Some studies have claimed that, for every dollar a man earns, a woman earns a mere 77 cents. Of course, there are always outliers and exceptions, but this is the general trend.

2. More minority workers are unemployed. A study from 2011 showed that 13.9 million people in the United States were unemployed. However, looking at African American individuals alone showed that 15.9 percent were unemployed, while Hispanic workers had an unemployment rate of 11.3 percent. Those contrast harshly with the rate for white workers, which was just 8.3 percent.

3. The odds that women will get back into the workforce drop significantly when they have children — especially when they have three or more kids. Some have suggested that this means people will discriminate against working mothers.

4. Age discrimination is only growing more common. In 1997, these claims accounted for only 19.6 percent of the total. In 2010, just over a decade later, that percentage had soared to 23.3.

These are protected classes. Employers are not legally allowed to discriminate on a basis of race, gender or age — along with a number of other reasons. And still, the stats show that this issue just won’t go away.

Do you feel like you’re being discriminated against for any of these reasons? You need to know that you’re not alone, that you do have legal options, and that there are ways you can fight for your rights.
