A retaliatory termination can be illegal

On Behalf of | Mar 10, 2017 | Wrongful Termination |

A retaliatory termination is just one type of wrongful termination. It may be illegal, it may violate your rights as a worker in California, and you need to know what legal options you have.

So, why does a retaliatory termination happen? There can be many reasons, but some of the most common are as follows:

— You were sexually harassed in the workplace and you reported it. Maybe your boss asked for sexual favors in exchange for a promotion, and you turned him or her in. Rather than getting justice, you got a pink slip. You may now have a case against the company.

— You were asked to do something illegal on the job, and you refused. Maybe you even logged a complaint with a supervisor. Instead of stopping the illegal practices, the company just terminated your contract.

— You filed a report with OSHA about an unsafe workplace. You’re allowed to do this without putting your name on the report, but maybe your boss still knew it was you, since you were the one mainly exposed to the danger. As the OSHA investigation began, you were let go.

— You saw discrimination against a co-workers, perhaps on the basis of race, gender or age. You complained, hoping to make things right. Not only did the company fire your co-worker, but they went ahead and fired you, as well. Now you may both have a case.
