Can my boss tell coworkers about my disability?

Navigating the workplace with a disability can already feel challenging, but when personal information starts getting shared without your consent, it can feel like a line has been crossed. You might be left wondering what your rights are and whether your employer went too far.

Privacy in the workplace isn’t just a matter of courtesy, it’s often protected by the law. If you’re concerned about what your boss can legally share, you’re not alone in asking.

What can your boss share?

First, it’s important to know that your medical information is considered private under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). If you’ve disclosed a disability to your employer, they generally aren’t allowed to share that information with your coworkers without your permission.

That said, there are a few exceptions, but they’re narrow. For example, if another employee needs to know for safety reasons or to help implement a reasonable accommodation, limited information might be shared. Even then, your employer should avoid unnecessary details and stick to what’s absolutely needed.

Of course, misunderstandings can happen. Sometimes, a supervisor might mention something casually without realizing it crosses a line, or a coworker may overhear something they weren’t supposed to hear. Even if they didn’t mean to cause harm, your feelings of discomfort are still valid and deserve to be acknowledged.

If you believe your privacy has been breached, it’s okay to ask questions and seek clarification. You can start by documenting what was said, who heard it, and how it affected you. Then, consider speaking with HR or consulting someone who handles workplace discrimination or disability law.

When something as personal as your health is shared without your permission, it’s natural to feel uneasy or unsure about what to do next. If you’re facing this kind of situation at work, it may help to speak with someone who understands the rules and can guide you through your options with clarity and care.
