81 percent of women experience sexual harassment

Sadly, harassment in the workplace is far too common for women. According to a new survey, 81 percent of women experience sexual harassment. This staggering statistic shows just how vital the #MeToo movement is for empowering women.

Sexual harassment takes many forms, including intimidation, coercion and comments. Here are the most common forms of harassment and assault. 

Verbal harassment

The recent survey finds that 77 percent of women deal with verbal sexual harassment. This includes the following:

  • Unwelcome sexual comments
  • Whistling
  • Catcalling
  • Unwanted and persistent flirting

More than three out of four women report they experience this type of demeaning behavior. 

Sexual touching

Unfortunately, unwelcome sexual touching is common too. Over half of women say they are victims of nonconsensual touching. This includes grabbing, groping and brushing up against women. 

Cybersexual harassment

Perpetrators of harassment do not only commit misconduct in person. With the advancement of technology, cybersexual harassment is on the rise. Forty-one percent of women say they experience harassment via the phone and computer. 

Physical following

Thirty-four of the women who responded to the survey said they experience being physically followed. Stalking and following at the workplace leads to a hostile and uncomfortable work environment. 

Genital flashing

While all types of sexual harassment are unacceptable, one of the most disturbing kinds is when a perpetrator flashes his or her genitals at the victim. Shockingly, 30 percent of women say they deal with this traumatizing behavior.

Sexual assault

Sometimes, harassment turns particularly physical or violent. Sexual violence and rape are not only troubling, but they are criminal. Twenty-seven percent of women say they are victims of sexual assault.

Whenever these instances happen, it is intolerable, and especially when these things occur at the workplace. Women should experience support and safety at their jobs. When women go through harassment or assault at work, they should take action.
